Why Wet Filament Destroys 3D Prints

Polymers used in FDM 3D printing are hygroscopic, meaning they chemically absorb water molecules from ambient room humidity. When water-laden filament enters a hotend at 200°C–280°C, the trapped moisture flash-boils instantly into steam. This miniature explosion creates steam voids in your extrusion line, resulting in audible popping sounds, inconsistent layer adhesion, and extreme stringing across travel moves.
